Oy with the poodles already!! I cannot wait for November 25 to be here so I can binge out with my long lost friends of Stars Hollow!
I remember starting my first year as a transfer student at Mississippi State University and watching the very first episode of Gilmore Girls in my apartment. The sarcasm mixed with loads of coffee and a dash of cynicism and lots of fast talking totally won me over! Lorelai was like a friend and Rory’s passion for books actually made me start reading again outside what was assigned in my classes. I loved the quirkiness of each character and of course, the entire town of Stars Hollow became a quaint little one hour getaway for me each week.
Sadly my second year at MSU the cable company got rid of the WB channel that carried Gilmore Girls. My then boyfriend, now husband, would record it along with Felicity and Dawson’s Creek each week, and bring them to me on an ever so classy VHS tape for my roommate Erica and I to watch on the weekends. Then he would take the VHS tape back to record the next week’s episodes. I knew I had to marry this man. #blessed
As Rory headed off to college, I headed off into adulthood. Marriage and a baby came right when Rory started rebelling with Logan. As my life changed I lost touch with my dear friends of Stars Hollow. I’d watch episodes as I could and thankfully ABC Family started airing it in syndication. I was not a happy camper with the way the show wrapped. My mom’s generation had the epic wedding they longed for when Luke and Laura of General Hospital were married and I wanted my Luke and Lorelai wedding!!! I felt jipped!
Since I’m a sucker for a happy ending, I came up with my own ending for my fictional friends. As I started rewatching the shows in syndication I started noticing all the political jokes and comments I somehow ignored before. The more I grew in my faith and political awareness I couldn’t ignore the adoration of liberal figures from Hillary Clinton, to Saul Alinksy, and even the Planned Parenthood poster hanging in Rory’s dorm room. (Insert big frowny face). All of this helped lead me to my perfect Gilmore ending.
So obviously Luke and Lorelai have the perfect Stars Hollow wedding! There’s a long back-story in my head, but basically an old friend of Luke’s passes away and Luke and Lorelai adopt his son who’s about 7 or eight years old. It’s all adventurous and sappy happy I assure you! Luke’s Diner and The Dragonfly continue to be uber successful and Sookie and Jackson continue to have an awesome relationship.
Kirk and LuLu also marry and procreate some of the weirdest, yet cutest kids ever! One of their kiddos ends up being absolutely normal, so much so he seems weird in their family. Michel…well I actually never gave him a story. Maybe he marries or maybe he just continues to adopt more dogs.
I always loved Dean and hated the way Rory treated him the first go round, however, I didn’t see them as high school sweethearts that grow old together. So in my ending, Deano graduates from college and keeps working for Tom and eventually takes over his business. He marries a lovely lady and they have your stereoptypical American family where he also coaches little league. Dean did eventually quit working at Doose’s in which Taylor still holds a grudge.
Jess being the rebel he is never married, but did have a child with his live-in girlfriend and they’re happy. He’s still writing and working in publishing and is man we all hoped he would be. Now I know in our faith we believe in marriage, then kids, but the character of Jess, like all the characters, aren’t Christians, so I kept his story as realistic as I could. Logan continues to be a party boy, refusing to settle down because he still longs for Rory. They continue an off again, on again relationship in between their other failed relationships. Sad I know. Eventually Logan meets another gal who has an incredible career and gives him a run for his money. They do live happily ever after, breaking the Huntsberger curse.
Rory does get the opportunity to be a foreign correspondent, but only working under a more tenured journalist. Now, if you’re not a Christian, the rest of this will seem ludicrous to you more than likely. But since college I’ve become a Jesus loving, people serving, conservative married momma. I am a redeemed post abortive party girl so I know just how far Christ can radically change people. Therefore, in my fictional story Jesus does the same things He does in real life. 🙂
Back home she starts reflecting on her life, looking at how happy her friends and exes are (Lane and Zack continue to rock music and parenthood by the way). Rory can’t quite shake what see experienced in Syria and all the Bible talk her cameraman shared with her. As she takes comfort in Stars Hollow she begins writing a novel based around her mother’s story. I mean HELLO PEOPLE!! Rory has to write a great book right!? After all the great literature she’s consumed, it only seems natural for her to pen her own and Lorelai has a great story to be told. Thank you Amy Sherman-Palladino!
She finishes the novel, it’s published and very successful. Rory ends up running into her old camera-man (sadly I never named him) and starts asking him more about Jesus. Eventually Rory gives her life to Christ, but She struggles still with the ideals she once had mixed with the Truth of Scripture she is now holding onto. No one is sure how to react to Rory’s conversion, but as always, Lorelai is supportive of her daughter.
In my perfect Gilmore ending, I’m not sure if Rory marries the camera man or if she meets another Christian guy. Either way, Rory marries and they move to Stars Hollow to plant a church (on my bucket list of fictional things I’d like to do). The church isn’t held in the Churchogogue though! Possibly it’s at Miss Patty’s cause let’s face it, that place needs a spiritual cleansing of the Holy Spirit kind and it’s a great central location.
There you have it. My happy Christian ending. Obviously that’s not how the creators of the show will see things, but I’m still giddy to watch it! I do hope it’s not overbearing in liberal dogma. That would break my Gilmore-lovin heart! And since there’s no Christian man likely to win over Rory and it seems like she may reunite with an old flame, I am totally team Jess! That rebel without a cause seemed to grow up quite nicely!
I will be back with my review of Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life shortly after November 25! Enjoy the trailer below while you wait with me!
